External roller shutters on the door: advantages
Roller shutters are a convenient and practical barrier for intruders. Installation of such a modern system on a door has a number of advantages, they are:
- protect the premises from unplanned intrusions;
- have excellent sound insulation;
- easy to operate;
- undemanding in care;
- protect entrance doors from precipitation;
- transform the appearance of the facade.
The versatility of such systems allows them to be installed on any door structure from a private residential building to industrial storage facilities. They can be used to equip shops, garages and other buildings.
Design features
Exterior roller shutters resemble blinds in appearance. Most often they are made of metal plates, which are raised and lowered along special guides. When opened, the entire canvas is neatly rolled into a roll and does not interfere with the passage.
The mechanism that lifts the entire system is located in a box, which is placed directly above the doorway. The whole system includes:
- a canvas made of horizontal metal strips - lamellas;
- guides for lifting and lowering the web;
- a box in which the roller shutters are located;
- the shaft that moves the roller shutters;
- bearings;
- control system.
Varieties of roller shutters
Modern outdoor door shutters come in many varieties. They can be classified into steel and aluminum according to the type of material. Roller shutters can also differ in:
- the width and thickness of the strips (lamellas);
- the weight of the finished structure;
- control option.
Material
The main purpose of roller shutters is reliable protection against burglary, therefore, the use of a durable steel profile in their production is more than appropriate. The galvanized steel lamellas are coated with a high quality powder coating that protects the metal from corrosion and significantly increases the service life and performance of the entire system. Thanks to this spraying, the surface of the profile can be made smooth or structured.
Another positive feature of the steel profile is the possibility of filling it with polyurethane foam. Houses equipped with such roller shutter systems receive additional protection from the penetration of cold in the frosty season and an excellent barrier from the heat in summer.

For the manufacture of external roller shutters on the door, aluminum is also used. Such structures retain their original appearance for a long time and have excellent sun protection and sound insulating properties. Since these systems are much lighter in weight, small motors can be used to drive them.
Control
Modern roller shutters can have several different actuators that open and close the system:
- belt mechanism - in this case, the web is lifted using a special tape that is wound around the snail. With this control, you can lift a canvas weighing up to 15 kg;
- collar drive - this sample is set in motion by a special gate, which is connected through a cardan shaft with a gearbox. The opening and closing process is quite easy and is done with a handle. The maximum weight of the structure in this case cannot exceed 36 kg;
- inertial spring- this method provides ease of opening. The spring itself is located in the cavity of the shaft on which the metal sheet is rolled;
- gear cable - the control of such roller shutters is quite simple. A similar mechanism is capable of lifting canvases weighing up to 55 kg;
- electric drive - this is the most expensive, but the most effective way to control outdoor roller shutters on the door. In this version, opening-closing is carried out with a key switch or using a remote control. This mechanism allows you to lift canvases of almost any weight.
Important! The door leaf, the opening of which is equipped with roller shutters, must open in the opposite direction from the roller shutter.
Installation of roller shutters
Depending on the location of the box, the installation of roller shutters can be:
- outdoor;
- built-in;
- combined.
In the first case, additional preparation of the slopes is not required. The box is placed above the doorway from the outside of the door, and the guides are mounted on both sides. Thus, the roller shutters almost completely cover the doorway and are flush with the wall. With built-in installation, the box is placed in the niche of the opening, and for the combined installation, its special preparation is required.
The main stages of installation
For the installation of roller shutters, first of all, it is necessary to carry out a bar to locate the control elements. If you plan to install a mechanism that works with an electric motor and a conventional cord, then the depth and width of the recess should be about 12 mm. When using gimbal control - about 22 mm. Holes are also made to fix the frame.
After preparing the necessary channel, the box is installed. With the help of levels, its position is determined, then it is fastened to pre-prepared tires and to the wall.
Important! When attaching the box, you need to ensure the uniformity of fixation. The slightest misalignment will lead to problems in the operation of roller shutters.
After that, the installation of guides and controls is carried out. After the end of the frame assembly, the canvas itself is installed.If you plan to install external roller shutters on the door with your own hands, then you should use the attached instructions in order to avoid inaccuracies and mistakes.
